During our 5 week Hugging the Coast Kayak Expedition (research on seaweed) in northern Sulawesi, Indonesia we use used our SteriPENs every day!

I treated all water with my SteriPEN from day one and stayed healthy throughout the entire expedition. This is not a miracle – it basic commitment to purifying all water before drinking it. SteriPEN made it easy!

This was an All Women’s Sea Kayaking Expedition in Northern Sulawesi, Indonesia. We paddled and traveled on-board a boat approximately 175 nautical miles from Manado to Sangihe in the Celebes Sea.

Our goal was to explore the lives and livelihoods of the islanders, with a special focus upon seaweed farming.

We visited approximately 20 coastal villages across 5 different island groups, and conducted semi-structured and in-depth research interviews with individuals and groups.  Despite living at the heart of this global ‘hotspot’ of marine biodiversity and resource wealth, our team found that the archipelago’s communities are in a state of flux. Standards of living are declining in many locations. Patchy marine resources management is having an impact on the region, along with the impacts of climate change.

Aisha Hill, Hawaii broke the lamp on her SteriPEN

From an email sent to SteriPEN support.Thank you for your support Aisha. We are gladly repairing your SteriPEN.

After many years of adventure, she may be dead: In 2005, I purchased my trusted steripen direct from you guys and traveled  all over the world (and literally at times from pure desperation and thirst took water from puddles littered with animal poop…a strong brew of  regret, that left a bad taste in my mouth, yet no sickness).

Sadly, after years of trusty use, while the steripen was sitting on my desk drying out from a weekend of canyoneering on Maui’s East side, a piece of wooden trim fell from across the studio and knocked the steripen off the desk and broke the quartz outer cover for the UV lamp (strangly it just  knocked out a small section…very wierd). My question is this: is there  any way to replace that outer quartz covering or is it a lost cause and time to order up another?

Thanks so much,
Aisha Hill, Hawaii

add evil-tasting chemical tablets to your water or pack a Steripen. How do I know this? I asked Reese Huges, co-editor of Pacific Crest Trailside Reader: Oregon and Washington: Adventure, History, and Legend on the Long – Distance Trail to take the Steipen into the high Sierras, a test that would go far beyond what most bike tourists might require. Little did I know how much he would come to depend on it.  Read more

Its great because now we no longer are buying and bringing bottled water from Kampala…

…just following up with the donation of the Steripen for One School at a Time. We are using it with a one liter nalgene bottle now at our field office. We just get the water from the neighbor who has a tap, we treat it with the steripen and then we can drink it. Its great because now we no longer are buying and bringing bottled water from Kampala, which is expensive and generates alot of plastic waste. …Thanks so so much for this valuable tool.

Alliance for the Lost Boys of Sudan Uses SteriPEN

The Alliance for the Lost Boys of Sudan is an organization founded to support Sudanese refugee children in the U.S. and in Africa. In 2009, the organization, along with its President and Founder, author Joan Hecht traveled to Sudan, bringing with them SteriPEN products to address water safety issues during their trip:

In 2009, several members from our organization traveled to South Sudan as part of a US delegation.  At the time, most of the population (approximately 8-10 million people) was without access to clean drinking water. Our SteriPEN Classic System Packs proved essential, perhaps even life saving, when traveling to areas of South Sudan known for polluted and parasitic – infested water sources. However, we felt completely safe using SteriPEN and, as testament to its effectiveness, no one on our team became ill due to contaminated water. We highly recommend this product! Thanks, SteriPEN!

Please be sure to read more about the Alliance and follow their work on Facebook.

How Do I Know It’s Working? How Do I Know It’s Working?

How Do I Know It’s Working?

How Do I Know It’s Working?

One of the most frequently asked questions people ask about SteriPEN products is, “How do I know it’s working?” Unless you’re willing to submit samples of the drinking water in question to a lab to have them analyzed, you just have to trust us when we say, “It works.”

Or, you can talk to any of the thousands of people who are satisfied (healthy) SteriPEN users.

Take nature photographer Doug Remien. Doug is a photographer from the old school (think big, heavy film cameras and tripods, the kind where you might put a black piece of cloth over your head), which we deeply respect. With his passion for wilderness and the arresting beauty found only in the lonelier parts of our planet, Doug spends hours getting to and from remote photo locations. He counts on SteriPEN for safe drinking water straight from the source. In a recent review of our Traveler 3-in1, Doug had this to say:

I’ve traveled with my SteriPEN all over the world and I can truthfully say I’ve never gotten sick when using it, only without it. It’s definitely a must have travel accessory never to be left at home.

Sure, waterborne risks are different in different parts of the world. If you’re still not convinced, take a look through our other Testimonials from hikers, travelers, fishers, paddlers, mountaineers and the President of the Explorer’s Club.

You can also read the rest of Doug Remien’s blog post and check out his photography at his website.

Nature Photographer Bill Campbell Recommends SteriPEN

On his blog, Bill Campbell recently took some time to address his preparations before heading out to shoot:

In the very early days of my backpacking career, we boiled all of our water, or drank it straight and took our chances. With the spread of many viruses and other organisms in water sources, treating your water should be a priority. For a while I carried some type of filter (water purifers eliminate all manner of yucky stuff in the water). But you had to pump. Now I carry a SteriPEN which uses UV light to kill everything in the water in your water bottle.

Mission Trip to Kenya Benefits from SteriPEN

On a recent mission trip to Kenya, Coordinator Grant C. brought along a number of SteriPEN products, including several Sidewinders to cover the teams water purification needs.  At the conclusion of their work at the Maua Methodist Hospital, the team presented members of the community with SteriPEN Sidewinders.

We had a wonderful trip to Kenya and were grateful to have the sense of security provided by the SteriPENs. We left some of them with friends and brought some of them home for use on future trips. We are extremely grateful for your generosity and concern for our safety while in Africa.  SteriPENs are an excellent alternative to other forms of water purification.

Adventurer Opti Conquers Water at Machu Picchu

Just came across this review of the SteriPEN Adventurer Opti and wanted to share it.

We backpacked through Peru for three weeks with this most sensational and mind boggling device. We took water from taps in almost every part of the country and treated it with the SteriPEN. The 4 of us not once got sick. We even treated water from a well on Machu Picchu! The SteriPEN is extremely light, portable, easy to use, and simply cool. We got some funny looks as we treated the water in restaurants, but it was absolutely worth it as many of the locals dont even drink the tap water. The money saved on water alone paid for nearly half the device’s cost.

I could not recommend this product any higher and will be using it/other of SteriPEN’s products as a result of this most impressive product.

SteriPEN Recommended in India Travel Guide

Travelers in India know to proceed with caution when it comes to drinking water.  Public water supplies are rarely potable, buying water bottled in plastic produces tremendous waste and doesn’t even guarantee cleanliness.  In her book, Enjoying India: The Essential Handbook, author J.D. Viharini heartily recommends SteriPEN’s UV purification of contaminated water.

“Portable purifiers that use ultraviolet light (such as the SteriPEN, which I can highly recommend) do an excellent job of killing micro-organisms, although they don’t remove pesticides or other conta-minants from the water. Nevertheless, they are particularly useful because they are so easy to use and carry.”
