Part 1 : Safe Travels with SteriPEN

Travelerface a wide variety of inconveniences in destinations around the world, but lack of availability of safe drinking water is a common theme in most countries outside of Europe and North America. Inconvenience should never be a reason to deter your adventures, but we strive to make international travel that much more convenient and environmentally sustainable with the SteriPEN Traveler.
We’ve put together a list of 5 amazing destinations where water purification is required. Your summer travel plans are probably coming to a close by now, but it’s never too soon to plan ahead for next year (or even the next couple months)!
Banda Islands, Indonesia
Once the main center of nutmeg production in the medieval world, the Banda Islands no longer have any exceptionally valuable exports, but there’s plenty to recommend in their little community. Dutch occupiers left behind a heritage of beautiful colonial homes and fortresses that can be explored by simply strolling along the pleasantly traffic-free streets. Beyond the beautiful, tranquil surroundings, Banda Islands’ largest attraction is probably the snorkeling. The clear and shallow seas surrounding the islands offer a colorful array of sea life for your gawking eyes.
Barichara, Columbia
An up and coming destination among foreign travelers as well as wealthy Colombians, Barichara is breathtakingly beautiful. The little town is remarkable for its picturesque quality and 18th century architecture –if you feel like you’re on a movie set, that’s because many films have been made here. With its other main draw being gourmet Colombian cuisine, this probably isn’t the best destination in South America for low budget travelers, but where else are you going to get creative renditions of the traditional hormigas culonas (fried ants)?
Siwa Oasis, Egypt
If you’ve ever imagined what a classic oasis is like, a burst of green emerging from hundreds of miles of barren desert, this is it. The Siwa Oasis is quite isolated, nearly 200 miles from the coastal cities. However, that isolation adds to its charm, and was a major factor in the development of the city. Tour the famed fortress of Shali and other mud brick houses that make up the old town. Explore the palm gardens, hike to surrounding fresh water lakes, or just relax. The Siwa Oasis won’t be the most action-packed destination you visit this year, but it’ll certainly be one of the most unique.
Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), India
Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is the second largest city in India -so it’s hectic to say the least. It mostly draws to mind images of abject poverty, but the suffering is tempered by incredible vibrancy and culture that should not be missed. See the Victoria memorial, a spectacular confluence of eastern and western styles built by the British in 1921, or attend the multitudes of festivals and cultural events taking place throughout the year. There’s so much to explore in this city from flower markets to temples, though your best bet is to wander around and drink it all in. And of course, all those delicious Bengali curries.
Antsiranana, Madagascar
Antsiranana has plenty to explore (and plenty of French influenced cuisine to gobble up) but is more a base for exploring the beautiful natural surroundings than a destination in of itself. Charming beaches are nearby, but you’ll probably want to explore one of the incredible nature reserves in the vicinity. An hour to the south, Réserve Spéciale de L’ankàrana features the other-worldly tsingy limestone outcroppings, some of the many lemur species of Madagascar, as well as hundreds of other species of flora and fauna that can only be found in this island country.
The SteriPEN Traveler Mini Keep You Healthy All Over the World
6 inches long and 3.6 oz with batteries, our new SteriPEN Traveler Mini slips into your luggage with barely more impact than your toothbrush. But giving it 48 seconds to work its UV magic will spare you from the Traveler’s Diarrhea that affects 10 million travelers a year.
