Testimonials From Our Customers

J.R. in New Zealand"The SteriPEN is the most amazing piece of tramping equipment I have purchased. Having recently been to Indonesia on mission trip, I realised the importance of safe drinking water.

I know it can be a big cost for some, but I assure you it is well worth the money you pay for it. Water in the developing countries is sometimes hard to come by. You need to drink at least 4 litres of water a day. The bottled water cannot always be trusted as many a time I came across bottles that were already opened and I did wonder where the water came from that was inside.

I personally purchased the solar panel as well, which was fantastic as there was very limited resources where I went and I did not see any shops selling the batteries that were needed for the Steripen. I also bought a second set of rechargeable batteries so I was able to continue using my Steripen as I was recharging the flat set. I also took a backup set of non-rechargeable batteries, but did not need to use them.

So I was able to collect water from the local taps and sterilise it with my Steripen. I never once got sick nor suffered from diarrhoea. Being a medical student, I know the importance of keeping yourself safe and as for medical care in the remote parts I went to, forget it! The hospitals I worked in were not much better, more people died than got better. So yes, in my opinion it was well worth the cost, compared to the cost of getting ill."

FRGS the SOLIO 2008 Mount Stanley Expedition in UgandaIn the mountains you could actually drink the water right out of the streams. However, once we dropped down from altitude we were in locations where there were no villages or bottled water so we had to rely on our SteriPENs for purifying all water. The porter responsible for water was our cook, Cornilious. He became quite proficient in the task of purifying water. Halfway through the journey, which was the toughest trek I have ever been on, we managed a night back in the town of Fort Portal. That was the only night we did not purify the water since we were based at a local hotel. I paid the price by getting a stomach problem that stayed with me until I returned to Austria. I plan to never again travel without my SteriPEN!

A. Groh, Thelon RiverFour of us have just returned from a 180-mile canoe trip on the Thelon River, located in the NWT & Nunavut territory of Canada. Being 400 miles into the wilderness offered many challenges, one of which was having safe drinking water, and your "classic" SteriPen was what we relied on. This instrument performed flawlessly. It was dependable, compact and very easy to use. We required, at a minimum, 3 gals. per day and the SteriPen never let us down. Guaranteed this will be the number one purification system on all future trips. Thanks for such a wonderful product.

I would like to thank you for sending the two samples of your SteriPEN product. They were extremely useful to us on our trip through Cambodia. I found they helped us greatly to procure clean water in remote locations. They also helped us keep from contributing to the plastic trash piles that are so prevalent in SE Asia!

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this product to anyone traveling to any location where potable water access is a consideration. Not one of us became sick in a month of travel through Cambodia.

Dear SteriPEN, My wife and I are missionaries in Dakar, Senegal West Africa. Although the city water supply is treated here, we have had some intestinal "issues" and questions concerning possible contamination by wastewater and/or possible contamination in our onsite reservoir. We have started using SteriPEN to treat our drinking water after first running it through an in-line ceramic/silver nitrate/activated charcoal filter, and it seems to be helping! We are recommending SteriPEN to our fellow missionaries. Thank you for a great product.

~Sincerely, William A. Bosley

My boyfriend and I traveled in Peru for three and a half weeks and depended on our Steripen to make sure our water was safe to drink. It was quick and convenient, the water tasted great, and it was the first trip traveling abroad where neither one of us developed mysterious stomach problems. We will never travel - or hike - without it again.

I just wanted to let you know how great your product is!!! I have been using my Steripen for about 1 1/2 years without a hitch. On Lake Superior, I got water for 4 in no time at all on a 5-day, 90-mile trip. My best test to date though was last weekend. I was snowshoeing the Manistee River Trail in Michigan and used my Steripen to purify all the water for a group of three. We had access to good but very very cold water from the river and from side streams. My Steripen fit easily into my pocket or in my sleeping bag at night with temperatures between -1 and 25 degrees. I couldn't do this with a ceramic filter and protect it from freezing and it sure was a lot easier and faster than trying to melt snow! This is definitely one of my favorite pieces of gear (and I own lots - my trail name is GearHead).

There are times in this world when a new product comes along that changes your life. The SteriPEN is such a product. What first enticed me was the weight and size - just mere ounces and about the size of three pens. Then I got hooked on the ease of use - just push a button, stir for a minute and voila - a clean liter of water. I used it in filthy water and never got sick, even in Pakistan. Once you get hooked on the ease of use, I started only carrying one liter of water in my pack side pocket, with the SteriPEN right next to it. Anytime I was thirsty, I just filled up, stired and was back on my way without even holding up team members. In addition to its use on my expeditions, I have now been using it Mountain Biking, just slipping it in my jersey pocket or hydration pack, saving pounds of weight of water on all day rides. It is so unobtrusive to use, that you can easily treat a glass of tap water at a restaurant while traveling in a third world country. Think of all the petroleum saved from plastic water bottles and the shipping of those bottles from places like Aspen and Fiji. To further help save the environment, SteriPen can be used with a solar reusable battery charger! Thanks SteriPEN for helping save our snow and our planet!

We know Public Water Treatment Plants do their best to offer safe drinking water to the population, but we also know that problems can happen in the distribution lines (leakage, contamination, etc.). Looking for the most advanced (yet cost-effective) solution to purify everyday household drinking water coming from tap, I first tried a purifier that adds chemicals to the water, but that did not work good since my wife is quite alergic to chemicals. Looking for a more natural way to do it I crossed along the way with SteriPEN. Without adding any chemical it makes each liter of questionable water ready to drink in less than 2 minutes. Very effective and safe to use, SteriPEN gives us peace of mind for almost every pathogen that we worry about. A great advance in technology! Congratulations for this state of the art product!

Using SertiPEN on Mt. Aconcagua and Mt. EverestI'm pleased to report that everyone - all six of us - on BACKPACKER Magazine's Team-TarpMan had good experience with the SteriPENs we used several times each day while we were hiking the Continental Divide Trail in the Wind River Range of Wyoming.

The fact that the SteriPENs worked so well - and with so little effort - was much appreciated, since our entire week-long expedition was at elevations from 9,200' to 11,118'!

ESPECIALLY NICE: Hydro Photon, Inc.'s recent research and tests that have made it possible to recommend an amount of water greater than 32oz can safely be purified by the SteriPEN with a 90 second dose of UV light! Our being able to purify 48oz of water at a time was wonderful!

Hello, I just wanted to drop a line to thank you for the great product you have in SteriPen it is as close to "Scout Proof" as any camping product I have seen in 35 years of scouting. We recently completed a 5 day 33 mile hike on the Chilkoot Trail. The scouts were hydrating on a regular basis because of the ease of use, no bother of hoses, pumping, or the taste of iodine tablets. I would just leave it on a table in camp and they would use it on their own. Other campers were intrigued to say the least and I dare say there should be some more sales in the near future. SteriPen has earned a place on my pack for future hikes.

~P.M., Scoutmaster, Juneau, Alaska

The Steripen has become a favorite of everybody. Dan (my brother) and I used the Steripen on everything from the very beginning, including hot water for tea or coffee. Others did not think it was necessary. Most everybody has been sick except my brother and I. All the others eventually became converts.

I am writing you from India. My partner and I have been here for two months and plan to be in south and southeast Asia for a couple of years, at least. We bought a SteriPEN at REI in San Francisco. Our options, as you know, were chemicals or filters - neither reasonable for long-term use. We know you are probably aware of this but the environment here in India NEEDS SteriPEN ASAP. We've both traveled in the developing world before but were in a conundrum about how to avoid adding to the torrent of empty plastic bottles left behind by tourists.

We know the SteriPEN does nothing for chemical or metallic run-off and waste but, since we've been using it, we've become strong advocates. In a place like this, SteriPEN seems like the most environmentally sound choice. Anyplace where travelers are the main or sole consumers of plastic H2O bottles would benefit from the SteriPEN.

People discuss whether or not bottled water is actually up to a reasonable health standard or not. In my years of traveling in the developing world, there is always concern among backpackers if the bottlers are simply bottling un- or minimally treated water or not. With little to no consumer protection in a place like India, one has no way of confirming. In any event, even though some people express concern, they buy bottled H2O hand over fist. At a time when it's hot here, as it is now, one person will buy three or four liters a day. All that plastic has nowhere to go. We are astounded. Sadly, Pepsi and Coke have the largest bottled H2O presence here currently.

The SteriPEN worked without fail even on the most questionable of water.I wanted to thank you for making such a wonderful product. I just got back from South America where I backpacked from the southern tip of the Patagonia Andes all the way up through Bolivia and into Peru. The SteriPEN worked without fail even on the most questionable of water (which is found in Bolivia). The ease of use and peace of mind it provided were invaluable. Thanks again for making a great product.

Using SteriPEN in the Canadian Rockies
Yoni & Justin, Canadian Rockies, Summer 2005

"Regarding SteriPEN - I am probably your most enthusiastic user. It was fantastic! I mean it. To have something that can clip onto your belt and be so easily useable and reliable, is a wilderness travelers dream. We did not have to use the Pre-Filter.

It was so convenient to be able to dip your Nalgene bottle into the lake from the canoe and then pull the SteriPEN from your belt and sterilize your water. Before we would have to stop along the shore, unstrap the packs, retrieve the pump and then set it up and pump. A very time consuming task and one that interrupts your trip and wilderness enjoyment. SteriPEN is so neat and so small it really fills a need for the paddler and hiker. Tell the folks at Hydro-Photon, Inc. that their efforts in discovery and design are a real break through for this segment of the market. It is rare that a product you read about exceeds your expectations once you use it. What a great surprise."

Using SertiPEN on Mt. Aconcagua and Mt. Everest"I first learned about SteriPEN when leading an expedition of Brown University researchers up Mt. Everest in 2002. I was really impressed with how fast and light the SteriPEN is. Since then I have used SteriPEN on Mt. Aconcagua in Argentina and recently again on Everest. Climbing at high altitudes can be dangerous enough without taking risks on bad water. Using SteriPEN is so easy - it is a great addition to my climbing gear. Thanks!!"

Dear Folks,

I just wanted to drop you a line and rave about your excellent service. I had one of your earliest models of the SteriPen, and it has been a life saver. One of the highlights of its use was on the Na Pali Coast Trail in Kauai, where we went with a group. It performed flawlessly, and it was very easy to use; each person filled their bottle with water, then we passed around the SteriPEN. Fast and easy are two words that describe your product. People along the trail were constantly stopping to gawk at the ease of the purification process. In all of our use of the SteriPen, none of us have ever shown the slightest symptoms of illness from the water.

The last trip I took in Yosemite my SteriPEN failed. I called your company, expecting the usual run around one receives when trying to repair an older item. Instead, Aaron Cox simply said to send it in. His biggest concern was when my next trip was, so that my fixed Pen would be back and available for use! Within a matter of days after sending in my old SteriPEN, I received a brand new one in the mail, with a new case and owner's manual. I can't wait to use it in a few weeks in New Zealand.

I am astounded at your service. It is something I have never before experienced with any other company that I have worked with. Aaron was a pleasure to work with, and your service is about 25 points higher then exceptional.

Thank you for everything you have done, and I look forword to using the pen in the months and years ahead, and I will continue to sing your products praises to everyone I see on the trial.

I recently returned from an adventure in northern Canada, in an area that was very remote, and covered approximately 70 miles by water and portages. Communication was unavailable. Although it is assumed that the northern Canadian waters are 'clean', one cannot be to careful especially in this day of manmade toxins and poisons that seem to find way to our water supply. Not long after the trip began, the water supply we took with us became depleted. The intended water purification system we had was malfunctioning. Without communication we did not want a case of giardia or 'whatever' to ruin the trip. Unknown to others, I had brought along a SteriPEN unit. From the looks received, the others were skeptical. After all, &.. the approved means of backwoods water treatment was always 'pump and filter', not a 'lightbulb'. We used it regularly on a daily basis to process the water for the each day's supply. I cannot overstate the merits of the ease of use and dependability of the SteriPEN unit. It performed flawlessly.  I highly recommend the SteriPEN, not only to campers and adventurers, but to all individuals who on a daily basis consume water from questionable water supplies whether it be from a major metropolis water system, or drilled well. Rest assured, the others will be acquiring a unit for themselves, as one plans to take one with him while traveling in business. Thank you for a great product.

I finished hiking the Appalachian trail and was very pleased with my SteriPEN throughout my trek. I watched my friends switch from bulky, heavy filters to chemicals, which allthough lighter, took about 20 minutes to become safe. Frequently I would purify one liter of water for my friend to drink while he waited for the chemicals. The SteriPEN kept me healthy, saved me time and weight.

Using SteriPEN the entire Length of the AT

"Dear Miles, We backpacked the entire length of the AT - all 2172.6 miles through 14 states in 188 days AND used our Steri-PEN the entire way. We loved it! It only took 5 sets of lithium batteries for the entire trip. Another hiker also used the SteriPEN he only used 3 sets of batteries (only doing water for one person). Thanks for the GREAT tool - it is the best!"

~ Splash & Cobra

Little did I know, "way back when" that my brief note to you - telling of my profound satisfaction with your remarkable "SteriPEN" - would be the start of a new friendship for me! You've made a huge difference in my enjoyment of the outdoors... and I like having an opportunity to share my thoughts with you!~

~ Best regards

I am writing to thank you for developing the SteriPEN. My husband and I just got back from a trip to China. We used the SteriPEN to sterilize our drinking water every day, and did not have any difficulties normally associated with drinking unsterilized water.

I am a Professor of Chinese language and literature at San Diego State University who was born in China and who has visited there many times. I am well aware of the problems travelers can have in China if they do not have sterilized drinking water. On this trip, however, with SteriPEN in hand, my husband and I cruised from Shanghai on the Yangtze River all the way to ChongQing. On the way, we ascended the scenic "Yellow Mountain" (Huangshan), and passed the breath-taking "Three Gorges." Thankfully, we did not waste a minute of our trip because of water-borne sickness.

I am very grateful that you have developed a product that is so lightweight, convenient, and simple to use. I will continue to use SteriPEN whenever I travel, and will recommend it to all of my colleagues and friends.

~ Sincerely yours, Catherine Yi-Yu Cho Woo, Ph.D.

"Using the SteriPEN after water is collected in a bottle was much more convenient than having to sit at a stream and pump water, especially in the cold. Is the snow clean? I wish it were, because at extreme altitudes it is difficult to boil water for ten minutes--not to mention the wasted fuel. The SteriPEN ensures safe drinking while conserving other resources. It's the perfect mountaineer's companion. Because SteriPEN is small and unobtrusive, I found it useful while traveling, not just camping. You can use it discretely, putting your mind at ease while not offending your host when drinking water prepared by people in their homes."

~ Michelle Gregory, Professor, Brown University 2002 Everest Expedition

"During my climb of Kilimanjaro the rest of my party used traditional pumps and filters. Needless to say one by one they all asked to use the SteriPEN. One use of your product that was not in your brochure was to purify hotel drinking water. It can be a big inconvenience to have to order bottled water every time that you are thirsty."

~ Richard Wiese, President, The Explorers Club, NYC

"I found the SteriPEN's speed and efficiency welcome, especially when purifying several bottles at a time. The device is faster than pump filters for large groups (no muscle required) and quicker than chemical treatment even if you're solo (no waiting)."

~ Dennis Lewon, Backpacker Magazine, April 2002

"Last summer, just before nightfall, I fell while rapidly traversing a boulder field in the Trinity Alps wilderness of Northern California. The fall caused me to suffer a very deep cut on the palm of my right hand. Once I had the wound dressed, the ace bandage made it very difficult to grip anything. I remained in camp the next day, and had I not had my SteriPEN, it would have been absolutely impossible for me to treat any water. I still had a two day hike ahead of me before I could reach trailhead, my car, and an opportunity for much-needed medical attention. The reliability of the SteriPEN and its ONE-HANDED OPERATION makes it totally unique and much appreciated! Thank you, Hydro-Photon!"

~ Leon N., California

"I have used the SteriPEN a lot while travelling in South America, South East Asia, and lately in Egypt. I have found the SteriPEN to be very reliable, easy to use, and a comfort when you are unsure about the water you are using, as in some places even the bottled water can be suspect. I would recommend that any one travelling either for business or fun, use the SteriPEN to make sure that the water they are using is safe. In all my travels I have not once had any illness that could be attributed to the water I have treated with the SteriPEN. A great invention." Regards,

~ Bill B, Bergen, Holland

"For our trek, the SteriPEN worked just fine. On Kilimanjaro, the water source is mountain streams, so we filtered the water, poured it into a 16 oz. Nalgene bottle and applied the SteriPEN treatment to it. We repeated this until all of our water bottles, camelbacks, etc. were full for the next day. We also did this in Nepal. One of the things that I like best about the SteriPEN is that it means one can walk into a hotel room in a 3rd world country and immediately sterilize the water from the lavatory faucet rather than having to go find a source of bottled water. Another problem is that the water sold as mineral water in bottles in some countries is not to be trusted. We have been back a few days and unfortunately, have spent part of them preparing a "safe" room in the house plus loading the car with supplies in case we need to evacuate by road. BUT, the water filter and SteriPEN are in our exit supplies, and it makes me feel better knowing that I can have clean water. I am also thrilled to have the solar powered battery charger at this time because as long as there is sun, we can charge batteries for flashlights, the GPS, etc. Hope this info helps you, and I hope you sell lots of SteriPENs. It is a great product. Hope to meet you some day."

~ Regards, Gay H., Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

"The SteriPEN exceeded all my expectations on my recent climbing expedition to Mt Barunste in Nepal (23,500 ft). I was a little concerned about the claims of it killing 99.99% of all bacteria and viruses so I planned to back up my water purification with iodine in case I got sick using the SteriPEN. In the hectic days prior to leaving I forgot to buy the iodine. It was while I was in the Delhi Airport in India that I realized I didn't have the iodine. I was stuck in the dreaded Transit Lounge for 22hrs while waiting for out Royal Nepal flight to Katmandu. The only source of water was a tap on the side of the wall. Staring at the tap watching others use water from it made me a little worried to say the least about its purity. After a short read over the instructions supplied with the SteriPEN I decided that this was a perfect way to see if the robust claims by Hydro-Photon were accurate. I ended up treating my water using only the SteriPEN for my entire six weeks in Nepal. The real test came at the Base camp for our climb. There were eight expeditions camped on the shores of a lake at the base of the mountain. The latrines were located only 100 feet or so from the shoreline and the runoff was into the lake, which doubled as our cloudy, polluted drinking water. The recommended dose for 1 liter of water was two pen treatments. I found the water so cloudy with pollutants that I treated a liter three times because all the suspended sediment was blocking much of light from the pen.* The leader, who is a nine-time Himalayan veteran, and myself, a Himalayan rookie, were the only ones on our team not to get sick. The SteriPEN purified all the cloudy and obviously polluted water while six others using water filters got sick. The SteriPEN is fast too, purifying a liter of water in 20% of the time it takes a filter. I completely believe the SteriPEN kept me healthy. After our expedition we went on a Jungle safari in southern Nepal where the elevation is about 3000 feet. Out of necessity we were purifying water from rivers where water buffalo and elephants used the washroom. The Pen kept me healthy again while four members of our team got sick. This Pen works!"

~ Brian M., Alberta, Canada

"No one should go TDY (temporary duty assignment) without it."

~ Ariel W., U.S. Army Logistics Operations Center, Springfield, VA

"Just got back from Argentina and our climb of Mt Aconcagua. the SteriPEN worked GREAT. We took a filter but only used it once for sediment in the water. SteriPEN is just so much easier."

~Collin K., Colorado

"We set off on our trip to Africa in February of 2002. Leaving behind the chilly climes of a Canadian winter in exchange for the salty heat of Cape Town, South Africa. Our journey was to last some six months and in that time we were to visit South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique. On many occasions throughout the trip we found some use for the SteriPEN, either in hotels where the water was far from safe or at bush gas stations where nobody was ever really able explain to us what the water's source could be. The effectiveness of the instrument also became apparent after each use since we found that after drinking the water we had treated we never suffered from the discomfort of stomach upsets. The most memorable occasion for the use of the SteriPEN came while we traveled between Zambia and Tanzania aboard a train called the Tazara Express. This journey involved three days and nights aboard a severely packed train through the spectacular landscapes of open savannah and then later the thick foliage of green jungles. Although the vistas were unforgettable we realized a day into the trip that our four bottles of water would not last and that our chances of finding more were bleak. The train bar did not waste the valuable space in their fridges with water since beer was the preferred beverage of our fellow passengers. Thus, we were forced to forage for water and finally found some in one of the toilets were the basin taps were still functioning. The water appeared clear and we rejoiced knowing that dehydration had been averted and that the SteriPEN would have no difficulty in eliminating anything potentially harmful. That night, while we slowly moved eastward our little compartment became lit by the blue glow of the SteriPEN as our water was purified. We finally made it to Dar Es Salaam suffering from no bellyaches or the like, though the same could not be said for the toilets which degenerated into a rolling and heaving mess over those three long nights and days."

~ Patrick M. and Emily H., Vancouver, Canada

"This SteriPEN is a great device! We use it every day for all our drinking water-that amounts to a minimum of 8 uses at 16 oz. of water each use for 1 gallon/day. It finally refused to work anymore-sending a solid red signal with the bulb not lighting upon being placed in water. It's the fail-safe mechanism (for water safety) as described in the user's manual. We've owned it for about two years. The math shows well over 5,000 uses (the claimed "wall" for flashes)."

"I don't fully trust our bottled water (untreated, high mountain, spring water). Even if I had not done the cost calculation before purchasing the $200 unit ($.30/gal. @ 5,000 uses) I still would have bought it. The treatment concept is so elegant - no chance for contamination of the water by the filters (or what may have taken up residence in the filters). And now when the cost comes down to $150 ($.23/gal. @ 5,000 uses), it's a bargain for your peace of mind."

~ Bethany B., Oregon

"I used my SteriPEN on a two-week hiking trip in Glacier National Park, and then on a trip to the Costa Rican jungles. It's light, quick to use and reassuring."

~ Blaise D., Maine, USA

"This is truly an amazing product. Its technology, effectiveness, and convenience are impressive."

~Bob E., Charlottesville, VA

"I just returned from a 170 mile hike on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia and put SteriPEN to the test. As for convenience, SP beats the pump filters with their serpentine surgical tubing by a far piece. I treated and imbibed water from streams, creeks, springs, trickles, puddles, and ponds. Well, I'm still here!"

~ Jeff F., Boulder, CO

"We spent two weeks in China while adopting our daughter. Mixing formula was much easier with a quick and ready supply of purified water. Thank you for the quick delivery of our SteriPEN!"

~ Sheryl W., Louisville, KY

"My SteriPEN was a big hit on our recent trip into the Catskills. Two of my fellow hikers swore they would buy one."
