  • Travel Clinic Recommends it to Patients

As a family nurse practitioner at a travel clinic, I advise my patients who are going to areas where food and water borne diseases are a problem to take a Traveler Steri Pen. Trying to find reliable, clean water is not only a challenge but it can be expensive. Staying hydrated in tropical climates with limited resources is very important. Whether traveling on vacation, or as a student or humanitarian, having a Traveler Steri Pen gives you piece of mind. A patient who did a mission trip to Haiti, told me she gave her's away as a gift to the Haitian health worker she had stayed with to thank her for her hospitality. She was so grateful.

This is the 2nd Steripen product I've purchased. 1st unit was an early gen (?Journey). Couple issues with that unit were the water sensor & the need to use CR123 lithium batteries. Not fitting Platypus style or generic soda bottles was an inconvenience. Steripen has since addressed the sensor problem. For backpacking I just pack a diy gravity kit plus a few chlorine dioxide tabs for backup or viral concerns. But for travel the UV-C purifiers are my 1st choice. Rarely purchase bottled water. Some places I've visit have no or limited bottled water available. Preference for the Traveler. PROs: 1. AA batteries. Usually use high output rechargeable NiM. For longer trips the Traveler & recharger makes for a relatively light & compact kit. AA are more readily available than CR123. 2. Fits Platypus style of water container. Couple 2L and a 1L platy take little space and are light in weight. 3. Reliable. 4. Easy to change the batteries. The CONs deal more with the limits of technology. All centered around the UV-C lamp. Hopefully the next gen Steripen Traveler will have a less "fragile" and more energy efficient lamp. To have the same water purifying capacity in a two AA battery unit reducing the mass and size would be an added plus for this quality product.

I have five of these SteriPens(one for each occasion). They all work off of 4 AA batteries except for the SteriPen Freedom, which can be charged by a computer USB connection or even a solar charger.Needless to say,if your planning a trip abroad be sure to include a SteriPen of any style, don't trust bottled water.

WHILE TRAVELING THROUGHOUT CHINA, A COUNTRY THE SIZE OF THE UNITED STATES THAT HAS POISONED THEIR ENTIRE WATER SUPPLY, THE STERI-PEN WAS INDISPENSABLE.

I bought a SteriPen for use in East Africa on a three week trip. I tested it before leaving, packed it carefully in the middle of my carry-on, and tried using it when I arrived but it simply did not work at all. I was stuck! No water. 11:30 at night. Bad news - not reliable and not durable. I think the UV bulb failed.

I have had a steri-pen for three years now, Its been to Peru, Chile, Patagonia, Easter Island, New Zealand, Australia, India & at all times backpacking and wilderness camping in the UK. In all that time I have never had to buy bottled water either for my wife or myself & have drunk water from all sorts of sources, Natural or otherwise. I wouldnt be without it. It has not only saved me money but has stopped me having to purchase hundreds of plastic containers. Environmentally and healthy I feel this was an excellent purchase that I sing the praises of to everyone I meet.

I received this model as a gift before embarking on a backpacking trip through the Indian subcontinent. It provided hundred of liters of water in little time, whenever we could fill our water canteens. I loved the simplicity of it as well as the duration of use of just 4 lithium batteries. I take it with me hiking as it's such a simple solution and worth it's weight for the convenience and safety it provides. I sent in our model for repair as it needed a lamp replacement, quite prematurely, considering the guidebook's stated lifetime. Still, I'm hooked and will always heartily recommend this device to others.

I purchased this to use during travel to a remote Costa Rican location that has no electricity. Full disclaimer: I have not been able to use the product yet... In testing it prior to leaving for my trip I discovered that the rechargeable NiMH batteries that came with my GoalZero solar charger are insufficient to provide power for this item. I will try Li batteries to see if this solves the problem, but it defeats the pupose of bringing solar-rechargeable batteries on the trip. I would not recommend this until I have solved to problem.

Got this pen to accompany us for a 5-week backpacking trip across South Africa. Was recommended the Steripen brand from a relative who is a Maine Guide and highly recommends them.

The pen works as promised - we were able to sterilize water in several back country situations where we were away from the grid for weeks at a time. Even though most of the water in South Africa is safe to drink, it was helpful to have some additional peace of mind as my wife was pregnant.

We did have a couple of tense moments when the device appeared to be defective - it gave us the warning alarm for 'dead bulb' but it turned out to have something to do with our batteries (NiMH) and replacing the set with a new set seemed to help. This line is particularly sensitive to battery choice and I think in the future I would opt for bringing several Li-On batteries with me instead of NiMh rechargeables.

Oddly of the many things I thought we'd have a hard time finding in South Africa, batteries were everywhere - mostly I suspect because of tourists with really nice camera gear. Cords and cables are much more rare!

When you travel to a foreign country you don't always know the water quality.
Often times at night you can't find an open store.
In some countries bottled water is really tap water.
So you can be protected at all times!
I love having the assurance I will be ok if I have iffy water
