FAQs

FAQs for Traveler

Q: What is the difference between Classic, Traveler, Emergency and Defender models?
— Asked on January 17, 2014
A: All four of these models are basically the same device with different color schemes. All four products purify 1 liter of water in 90 seconds, 1/2 liter of water in 46 seconds. All weight the same and all four use 4 AA Lithium batteries either disposable or rechargeable. Differences UV Lamp Life The UV lamp in the Classic and the Defender are good for 8,000 treatments! Traveler and Emergency uv lamp life is 3,000 treatments. Warranty Emergency and Traveler models have a 1 year manufacturer warranty. Classic and Defender model have a 3 year manufacturer warranty. Included Filter The Classic model includes the Pre-Filter unlike other models.
Q: Can I use alkaline batteries with Traveler?
— Asked by Tim Archambault on January 17, 2014
A: No. We do not recommend using alkaline batteries with any of our products. We at SteriPEN highly recommend Energizer Lithium AA batteries. View our batteries page for details.
Q: Does Traveler work with a solar charger?
— Asked on January 17, 2014
A: Traveler utilizes AA lithium disposable or rechargeable batteries. SteriPEN does not offer a compatible solar charger for AA Lithium rechargeble batteries in our product line. However, there are many vendors that offer solar charging units that recharge AA Lithium rechargeable batteries. One such product we highly recommend is the Goal Zero Guide 10 for rechargeble AA batteries and Goal Zero Nomad 7 Solar panel.
Q: Is this effective against the norovirus? Norovirus is RNA.
— Asked by Dennis Mathias on February 18, 2014
A: We went right to SteriPEN inventor, Miles Maiden, to get this answer.
SteriPEN has never been specifically tested against norovirus however UV testing against norovirus has been done elsewhere.
The link below from the US EPA website goes to a relevant test report.
Final Report: Effectiveness of UV Irradiation for Pathogen Inactivation in Surface Waters
The test report states:
"The UV inactivation of murine norovirus, feline calicivirus, and echovirus12 was studied in phosphate buffer at room temperature using a low pressure UV source. All three viruses exhibited 2-log reduction following a UV dose of 15 mJ/cm2, whereas 4-log reductions were achieved at less than 30 mJ/cm2."
The results reported in this report indicate that the UV dose delivered by SteriPEN should destroy in excess of 99.99% of norovirus.
Q: Can this be used in drinks such as iced coffee, made with local tap water?  I'm frequently sick after buying these.
— Asked by mrs. Vranjkovic on March 9, 2014
A: SteriPEN has been extensively tested in use with water. Please do not use SteriPEN in mixed drinks, coffee, tea or soda.
Q: My Journey malfunctions intermittently with a flashing unhappy face circle and unhappy face battery display. Sometimes it works OK and sometimes it gets set up with the 1L indicator but as soon as I put it in the water the unhappy faces come up. What's the story here? Thanks, Nat
— Asked by nat crosman on April 12, 2014
A: Hi Nat, The reason for the unhappy face when you place the Journey in water is dependent on where you are seeing it. If you don't have the User Guide that came with your SteriPeN, you can find it here: http://www.steripen.com/journey-user-guide. Please feel free to contact our customer support department at [email protected]
Q: I've loved my SteriPEN Adventure Opti for about 2 years, but have only used it about 30-40 times. When I started use this year, it responds as normal with a green light, then flashing green as well as flashing LED next to the UV light. The UV light doesn't seem to be lighting though. How can I verify it's working? What manufacturer warranties are on my pen?
— Asked by Micah Christiansen on April 14, 2014
A: Hi Micah - The indicators you describe sound like your Adventurer Opti is functioning normally. If you need no longer have your User Guide and need help remember the how the indicator lights work, you can find a copy of the instructions here: www.steripen.com/opti-user-guide. For safety reasons, the UV light will not turn on until it is placed in water. If you are unsure that it is lighting in water, we recommend placing it in a clear glass, possibly dimming the lights so that the light from the lamp is easily observed. If then you believe it isn't on, please contact our customer support department at 888-826-6234. Your SteriPEN comes with a 3-year warrantee and we are here to help!
