SteriPen is a great company! I purchased my Ultra at a retail store “garage sale” (condition: like new) but when I brought it home to test, the Ultra indicated the lamp was out. I contacted SteriPen who quickly suggested I send it in to them for service. Just got it back this morning and I’m all set to go! All of the service technicians were very helpful and prompt when emailing back and forth. And they charged no service fee!! All I had to do was cover my return shipping.
Thank you for a great product and great service!

The SteriPEN is an absolutely essential travel tool, especially in developing countries where sometimes even the bottled water can’t be trusted. My husband and I have been traveling around SE Asia for over 8 months, we use our SteriPEN every single day. It’s easily one of the most important tools in our bag. You can read our full review on our blog here: http://wanderrlust.com/2014/08/05/the-most-useful-travel-tool-ever/ . I will never travel or hike without a SteriPEN again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't Leave the Trailhead Without it! I'm a nature photographer and Pacific NW hiker. This device has been extraordinarily helpful on long hikes. It's simple to use, and it works. I know because I have used it many times now--sources of water I'd never drink without treatment. Another great dimension to this product is that it does not change the flavor in any way. If you pull water from a glacier stream, you want to be able to taste the thirst-quenching water in its natural state; this lets you do just that.Lastly, we had a backwoods emergency due to a hiker shattering his leg a couple years ago. In the aftermath, I realized that I broke the device. SteriPen replaced it at no cost. Their customer service is responsive and helpful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Use Steripen=no plastic bottles trashed & saves $ Potable WaterMany travelers and locals buy and use plastic water bottles. I don’t like to see such a waste of resources with the bottles just going into landfill or recycled. I continue to use a SteriPen Freedom along with a wide mouth plastic bottle. The recharger cable for the SteriPen had a USB connection and also worked recharging my Logitech keyboard so I could use the iPad charger for this without bringing the SteriPen and Logitech charger which saved me about 4 oz. The purification process was quick—-about 1 1/2 minutes of UV light and no chemicals. I had no intestinal problems during the trip, but the Bangkok tap water smelled like sewage.I just returned from another 2 month to Colombia, Ecuador and Peru where I also used the steripen to purify water and continued to have no digestive problems on this trip. I figured I must have saved over 60 to 100 plastic bottles from going into landfills or more optimistically recycling. I also saved money by not buying this water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So easy to take everywhere- great bit of kit I teach expedition medicine and work as an expedition doctor and take this wherever I go, including walking in the UK. The battery lasts forever and the reassurance it gives is priceless. Great out in the wilds, but just as good in hotel rooms in less developed countries to save a fortune in bottled water. I love the fact you can insert it into an over the counter mineral water bottle and disinfect it. Solid piece of kit. Little tip- UV light disinfection is not as effective in water with particulates, so it's best to pre filter the water if it is not clear or has bits in it. Most close weave cloth or a sponge will do the job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great upgrade from my SteriPen Classic Used SteriPen Classic for many years over many hikes [http://bit.ly/175e82O], and after the Classic failing [http://bit.ly/1C691fG] we decided to 'upgrade' to the Ultra as it was lighter and fitted well with our solar charging gear. The Ultra has been great so far, and probably simpler than the Classic to use (if that's possible). We'll be taking it out to two big walks this year, where it will be very much needed every day for a couple of months!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Will never travel without one again! We have been travelling pretty extensively for almost seven years, living constantly on the road, and are real picky about what makes it into our backpacks. A combination of wanting to minimise our plastic bottle usage overseas and the need for a water purifier when hiking and camping led us to buying a SteriPEN Ultra, and it has been one of the best purchases we have ever made! We've used it travelling, camping and hiking in Vietnam, China, Tibet, Hong Kong and now Mongolia, and can't imagine not owning one. We've cut down our waste significantly and now don't have to overburden ourselves by carrying too much clean water as we go.The battery sterilises a lot of litres on a single charge, so we never really have to worry about finding power on the road. It's also really light and small, which is perfect for us.Couldn't be happier with it. From now on, there will always be a SteriPEN in our kit!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works beyond expectations. I use it and two others as primary source for water when visiting family in the Panama interior. We purchase water from the store in 3-gallon jugs. We refill our bottles from the jugs. When the jugs are empty, we wash them with a bleach solution and refill them using the SteriPEN. I pre-filter the water into our liter bottles, PEN it (we actually say it 'wanded it' because we call the SteriPEN a 'water wand'), and refill the jugs. We do this for 3 months. At one point, I watched grandma boiling water over the fire for the family and asked if I could try PEN-ing it to see which was quicker. I ran the pre-filter on 3 liter bottles and my daughters did the PEN-ing. We dumped them into the cleaned, lidded, 5-gallon buckets my family uses. We had 10-gallons done an hour quicker than over the fire. Yes, it involved 3 people working steadily instead of one but the water had no smoky flavor, no soot, and no chunks that were pre-filtered from the SteriPENed water. We or I (if the girls were at school) did it for the rest of the summer.I bring the batteries I'll need from the States. The CR123 and Lithium are hard to find in Panama. The rechargeable feature is wonderful. We had electricity most of the time so no inconvenience. The easy to read timer, 'finished' icon, and 'failed' icon were easier for my daughters to use than the other SteriPEN models we have (but those are still very usable).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a great hiking tool! I've carried my Steripen only once but was certainly glad to have it along when I needed it! Carrying this little jewel beats the heck out of carrying a gallon of water, or using chemicals to clean up my drinking water. I'm looking forward to many miles of hiking with my Steripen to help me stay hydrated.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the Most Useful Pieces of Kit I Own! I've been using the SteriPEN Ultra everyday for over 4 months now and without a doubt it's one of the most useful pieces of kit I own. From the first try, I knew it would make my life much easier.Along with my boyfriend, I travel by bicycle. In many countries we travel to, finding drinking water means buying bottled water. Not only does it mean we spend more money but we consume more plastic as well, neither of which I'm happy with.We also use the Ultra for long multi-day hikes. It's so much more convenient to give river water a zap than it is to boil it (which takes a long time to cool off) or use tablets (which have a bad taste). If you're looking for a quick and effective way to treat water, you can't go wrong with the Ultra.

Asked by: summer
SteriPEN’s effectiveness has been well established in a wide range of tests conducted by certified independent laboratories and test facilities across the U.S. and Canada. These rigorous tests prove that SteriPEN exceeds the standard set forth in the U.S. EPA Guide Standard and Protocol for Testing Microbiological Water Purifiers. SteriPEN products have also been certified as safe and effective by the Water Quality Association. How can I tell when it is fully charged during charging?

Asked by: rgthorn
During the charging of the Ultra, there will be no progress showing on the OLED, (organic light-emitting diode,) screen. An icon of a battery with a lightning bolt indicates the pen is in charging mode, and this image will change to a battery with four horizontal bars stacked on each other to show when the charging is complete. At anytime while the charging is taking place, you can click the Activation Button to see the status of the battery in the horizontal line of bars under the image of the water glass. 1 bar = 25%; 2 bars = 50%; 3 bars = 75% and 4 bars = 100%.

Will this sterilize 3 liters or more at one time or does it work with only 1 liter at a time?

Asked by: Brian
The current models are for treating 1 liter volumes at a time. Many SteriPEN owners will utilize a 1 L vessel and transfer each to a larger container for storage. Our staff is hard at work on some new designs that will be able to treat larger amounts of water with a single dose, so we suggest you keep an eye on our web site, http://www.steripen.com/ , for news in the not-too-distant future. ~ David

What temperature range is the Ultra able to work within? Is there anything that can be done to extend this range (like keeping it close to the body). At what temperature could parts of the unit break.

Asked by: gzjudi
The Ultra's temperature range is from 32 degrees Fahrenheit, (zero degrees Celsius,) and avoiding any ice in the water, which will not let UV light rays to penetrate, and 120 degrees Fahrenheit, (49 degrees Celsius,).Your point about extending the range would apply to the performance of the battery. Lithium-ion batteries start loosing performance at 32 degrees F, (zero degrees C,) then drastically around -4 degrees F, ( -20 degrees C). For that reason we do recommend warming up the pen by keeping it in a interior jacket pocket, close to your body, to increase its performance. If the pen senses a cold environment, it will add a few seconds to the dose time to compensate and ensure a safe treatment. It will give a snowflake icon on the OLED screen to indicate this.At extremely hot or cold temperatures the pen could be more susceptible to other forces that could do some damage by the softening or the embrittlement of its component materials, so our User Guide states, "It should not be exposed to temperatures above 140ºF/60ºC or below -4ºF/-20ºC."~ David

We were given a Steripen ultra with the recharge cord. I understand it also has a battery. We don't have the instruction book. Do we have to unscrew the top to access the battery?

Asked by: Lara
Here is a link to our web page where you can access a User Guide for any of our models: ww.steripen.com/user-guides/ . The inboard, permanent battery is not intended for owner service and is only meant to be recharged with the USB cord via an AC wall adapter, a computer or a solar panel. The custom designed and built battery is not available commercially and is engineered to last well past the 8,000 treatment expectancy of the pen's UV lamp. Although it can be accessed by unscrewing the top, this is not recommended and, in normal use, will not be necessary. Our technicians on staff in our Maine based workshop can do this when need arises, which only happens very infrequently. ~ David
