When camping, hiking, backpacking or traveling the Classic 3 with Pre-Filter is the perfect pack to keep you safely hydrated. Classic 3’s UV light destroys over 99.9% of waterborne microorganisms that cause illness.

With SteriPEN Classic 3, one set of four alkaline batteries will treat 100 half-liters or 50 full liters of water. Or supercharge your SteriPEN with a set of lithium batteries and you’ll treat up to 150 liters! Classic 3’s enhanced LED indicator panel lets you know treatment size and status of batteries and UV lamp. Classic 3 is sleek and ergonomic with an easy-to-remove twist-off lamp cover. Like all SteriPEN UV water purifiers, Classic 3 is simple to use: remove the lamp cover, press the activation button, submerge in water and stir. In 48 seconds you have ½ liter of safe drinking water or purify a full liter in 90 seconds. Compared to standard chemical treatments that can take up to four hours, that’s safe water fast without adding chemicals that can leave an unpleasant aftertaste.

The 40×40 micron screen Pre-Filter fits perfectly on wide-mouth one liter water bottles and removes particulates that can get in the way of UV light in water. The Pre-Filter is designed to be stored directly on a wide mouth bottle and the SteriPEN Classic 3 fits perfectly in the filter. Just insert Classic 3 in the filter opening, turn the bottle upside down, and gently rock to circulate light throughout bottle. The tapered end also fits snugly in plastic water bottles. Just insert the lamp into the water bottle, turn it upside down and gently rock the bottle.

  • Ergonomic design with a new easy-to-remove twist-off cap.
  • The first SteriPEN to work effectively with alkaline batteries. Can be powered by alkaline, lithium, or NiMH batteries.
  • Enhanced LEDs indicate treatment size and status of batteries and lamp.
  • Watertight. No more worries about dropping your Classic 3 in a bottle or stream.
  • So easy … just activate, place in water, and stir. LED indicators flash to let you know when water is safe to drink.

    Dear Steripen
My wife Sally and I leave for India in one month embarking on a fairly intense holiday. We are both heavy water drinkers and wish to take the maximum of precautions on this holiday. Steripen looks to be the answer.

We recently took our Steripen on a trip to Colombia and used it every day to purify tap water from our hotel rooms so that we didn’t have to buy bottled water and contribute to the local landfills. At the end of the trip we did a 3-day trek in the Los Nevados National Park. Our guide told us that most of his clients refuse to drink the water from the rivers even if he purified it with iodine tabs. This posed a problem for him as the park is at a high elevation and his clients needed to drink plenty of fluids to avoid altitude sickness. So we decided to give him our Steripen so that he could use it for his clients and keep them healthy and happy. A happy parting with our Steripen, but we’ll miss it!

This SteriPen works great! The pen is efficient and I’ve used it on several backpacking trips. Its fast and easy, and I like the pre-filter that stops debris from entering the bottle. This is my main water filter when I backpack and camp. My only complaints are (and these are small. I would definitely buy this product again and recommend it to everyone) that (1) unlike the earlier versions of steripens, cleaning 1 L of water requires two clicks of the on button. The older versions required one click for 1 L and two clicks for 1/2 L. It seems to me like the safest thing is to have the 1 L be the first click, just in case someone forgets to click a second time. And 2) the pre-filter air nozzle that screws onto the cap is awkward and the threads are a bit weak. It often takes me several tries to attach the nozzle correctly. All in all, this is a great product and I plan to use it on all my up-coming trips.

Haven’t used it a whole bunch yet but the little bit that I have, it’s been amazing. It came highly suggested by some other avid hikers from my area. I love the outdoors and it’s great to have such a great system to use to keep us hydrated.

I am planning a trip to Kauai and it has Leptospirosis in the streams. Will this kill it? Do you have an ETA on more classic 3 models with free bottle? Thanks

I have a steri classic 3 that is a couple of years old.  use on one hiking trip.  Going to Cambodia and when I push the button, nothing happens.  the lithium batteries show a full charge.  Do you have any suggestions.

If you are getting no green light from the LED Indicator, you'll want to check the position of the batteries to be sure the two positive tip batteries are in the slots with the + sign and likewise with the negative ends in their - signed slots. Also the position of the battery cap has the small triangular arrow pointing to the lock symbol on the edge of the pen's body. If still no green LED shows when you click the Activation Button you can try cleaning the battery springs and terminal contacts inside the battery compartment and cap with the pink eraser tip on a pencil. If still no LED call us at 888-826-6234, M-F 8:00 - 5:00 eastern. ~ David

Your site says it is out of the SteriPEN Classic 3 with Pre-Filter and bottle, but none of the linked re-sellers carry the bottle that goes with the pre-filter, so where do I buy this whole kit if you don't sell it and it is not available from a reseller?

Asked by: koolerking
Although the Classic 3 is no longer sold in a package that includes a water bottle, the Pre-Filter it comes with is compatible with any Nalgene wide-mouth style bottle. There is also the Fits-All filter, sold separately, that uses the same filtering element and is designed to work with almost any size opening that is commercially available from many manufacturers. ~ David

Explain just how this product works, Thank you, Ernie

Asked by: Ernie
Hi Ernie, The quick answer is, SteriPEN products use ultraviolet (UV) light technology to purify water, destroying more than 99.9 percent of bacteria, viruses and protozoan cysts such as giardia and cryptosporidia. Beyond that, UV purification works as the ultraviolet energy emitted by the light is absorbed by the cells of the microbe, preventing cell enzymes from ‘reading’ its DNA. Without intact DNA, microbes can’t reproduce to make you sick. If you'd like to know a bit more of the details and read some very interesting technical reports, you can check out our web site's page: https://www.steripen.com/ultraviolet-light/proven-technology/ Click on the linking stars above: Proven Technology; Proven Effective; Proven Durability and WQA Approved. Purifying water with UV light offers many advantages. In addition to being safe and effective, UV light does not alter the taste, pH, or other properties of the water, and works without the introduction of chemicals to the water. Let us know if you have any further questions, Ernie. ~ David

Does this filter remove chlorine taste

Asked by: Retired Gumby
Thanks for your question regarding the possible effect on chlorine taste. Being a chemical, Chlorine would not be treated or removed from the water with the use of a SteriPEN or the Pre-Filter. Our 40 micron filter is designed to remove larger objects from water obtained from a source like a pond or stream where there could be floating dirt, twigs or leaf debris which could block the UV light within the volume of water. The light from the lamp renders the protozoa, bacteria and viruses harmless so that they can not cause the illnesses that would potentially occur from drinking untreated water. I wish I could say that SteriPEN and/or the Pre-filter could get rid of that chlorine taste, but you'll probably need a Carbon Block filter device for that. Regards, ~ David

Greetings from India. After I use my Steripen Classic 3 the green light flashes the same way as it does for activation prior to exposing the lamp to water. There is no long green light to signal that it has worked properly after the UV light turns off...?

Asked by: Mandela
Greetings, and thank you for choosing SteriPEN! The lamp should remain on for the complete treatment time and provide an LED notification that the treatment has finished successfully. Please contact our support department at support@sterpen.com or by calling 888-826-6234 and a representative can help you troubleshoot your SteriPEN. They will be able to help you understand whether or not your SteriPEN is malfunctioning. support.steripen.com

After sterilization how long can the water be stored before drinking or is there a certain time limit that you have to consume the water in?

Asked by: Danny
Danny - Many users store water after treatment, however, if you're concerned about the safety of stored water, we recommend re-treating the water before consuming.
