When camping, hiking, backpacking or traveling the Classic 3 with Pre-Filter is the perfect pack to keep you safely hydrated. Classic 3’s UV light destroys over 99.9% of waterborne microorganisms that cause illness.

With SteriPEN Classic 3, one set of four alkaline batteries will treat 100 half-liters or 50 full liters of water. Or supercharge your SteriPEN with a set of lithium batteries and you’ll treat up to 150 liters! Classic 3’s enhanced LED indicator panel lets you know treatment size and status of batteries and UV lamp. Classic 3 is sleek and ergonomic with an easy-to-remove twist-off lamp cover. Like all SteriPEN UV water purifiers, Classic 3 is simple to use: remove the lamp cover, press the activation button, submerge in water and stir. In 48 seconds you have ½ liter of safe drinking water or purify a full liter in 90 seconds. Compared to standard chemical treatments that can take up to four hours, that’s safe water fast without adding chemicals that can leave an unpleasant aftertaste.

The 40×40 micron screen Pre-Filter fits perfectly on wide-mouth one liter water bottles and removes particulates that can get in the way of UV light in water. The Pre-Filter is designed to be stored directly on a wide mouth bottle and the SteriPEN Classic 3 fits perfectly in the filter. Just insert Classic 3 in the filter opening, turn the bottle upside down, and gently rock to circulate light throughout bottle. The tapered end also fits snugly in plastic water bottles. Just insert the lamp into the water bottle, turn it upside down and gently rock the bottle.

  • Ergonomic design with a new easy-to-remove twist-off cap.
  • The first SteriPEN to work effectively with alkaline batteries. Can be powered by alkaline, lithium, or NiMH batteries.
  • Enhanced LEDs indicate treatment size and status of batteries and lamp.
  • Watertight. No more worries about dropping your Classic 3 in a bottle or stream.
  • So easy … just activate, place in water, and stir. LED indicators flash to let you know when water is safe to drink.

    Dear Steripen
My wife Sally and I leave for India in one month embarking on a fairly intense holiday. We are both heavy water drinkers and wish to take the maximum of precautions on this holiday. Steripen looks to be the answer.

  2. :

We recently took our Steripen on a trip to Colombia and used it every day to purify tap water from our hotel rooms so that we didn’t have to buy bottled water and contribute to the local landfills. At the end of the trip we did a 3-day trek in the Los Nevados National Park. Our guide told us that most of his clients refuse to drink the water from the rivers even if he purified it with iodine tabs. This posed a problem for him as the park is at a high elevation and his clients needed to drink plenty of fluids to avoid altitude sickness. So we decided to give him our Steripen so that he could use it for his clients and keep them healthy and happy. A happy parting with our Steripen, but we’ll miss it!

This SteriPen works great! The pen is efficient and I’ve used it on several backpacking trips. Its fast and easy, and I like the pre-filter that stops debris from entering the bottle. This is my main water filter when I backpack and camp. My only complaints are (and these are small. I would definitely buy this product again and recommend it to everyone) that (1) unlike the earlier versions of steripens, cleaning 1 L of water requires two clicks of the on button. The older versions required one click for 1 L and two clicks for 1/2 L. It seems to me like the safest thing is to have the 1 L be the first click, just in case someone forgets to click a second time. And 2) the pre-filter air nozzle that screws onto the cap is awkward and the threads are a bit weak. It often takes me several tries to attach the nozzle correctly. All in all, this is a great product and I plan to use it on all my up-coming trips.

  4. :

Haven’t used it a whole bunch yet but the little bit that I have, it’s been amazing. It came highly suggested by some other avid hikers from my area. I love the outdoors and it’s great to have such a great system to use to keep us hydrated.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just the best for travellers in the wild! I am a traveller around the World by bicycle and I previously used pump-filters and pills for getting my water drinkable any where on the road. But I simply wasn't fully satisfied. I had seen people with a SteriPEN and that looked to me the best option! I tried it, cross Alaska and Canada with it and today I can only recommend it! Simply one of the best tool I carry along with me on my trip. Fast, small and light, easy to use and reliable!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Taking it everywhere with me - The absolute best I took my Steripen to Papua New Guinea for the 9 days I trekked Kokoda. The only drinking source we had was from the creeks given we either used purification tablets or the steripen. I didn't get any type of sickness on the trip and the pen worked really well... about 2 minutes to zap 1.5L of water and about a minute for 1L. No dramas at all, although getting the cover on and off to change or install batteries is slightly challenging.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Backpackers Delight Recently we backpacked 80 miles through the foothills trail with this as our primary system for water. We were certain after our first day that this was a new favorite necessity. We were able to filter and sterilize our water quickly and it helped minimize the water that we carried which helped lighten our packs. Quick, simple and very satisfying! I would highly recommend this product to any hiker looking for a sure way to clean water!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from won't take it on the PCT on my next section It is heavy and requires 4 AA batteries. The first one I got malfunctioned after one use, fortunately I was trying it before leaving for my hike. So I took it back to the outdoors store I had bought it from, and had all kinds of problems getting a new one, despite the fact that I had just bought it and clearly there was something wrong with it ( the light turned to red on the second use despite the fact the batteries were brand new)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use and lightweight for backpacking! I used this on a backpacking trip right after I received it. It was perfect for the 20 mile river hike. We were always close to an abundance of clean running water. The steripen was quick and easy to use and very lightweight. We never had to carry much water because it was so quick. If you know you are going to have access to good water sources you can eliminate your pump from your pack. This purchase was well worth it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes travel safe and light. I have taken my original Steri Pen to India, Tanzania, Madagascar and dozens of other countries w/ unsafe water. No problems. Travel companions are always worried about where they can get their next single use plastic water bottle. I never worry and don't add to the plastic burden of the planet. On a recent hike in 102º heat I took only one water bottle and my Steri Pen, refilling at every stream I crossed

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most reliable and versatile SteriPEN to date! I've been using various models of the SteriPEN for years on backpacking trips in the U.S. and Himalayan treks in Nepal and Bhutan. Each generation of the SteriPEN design gets better and better. The current Classic 3 model is by far my favorite to date - the simplicity of use, rugged design and compatibility with AA batteries make this the most versatile and reliable SteriPEN I've ever used. I was recently doing relief work in Nepal, where our non-profit organization brought 100 SteriPEN Classic 3's in to the country and taught public school children how to operate the Classic 3 and work in teams, sterilizing large quantities of the school's (non-potable) tap water. The Classic 3 is so simple to use, we had dozens of school kids working efficiently together in less than an hour, filling 35 liter storage containers full of safe drinking water for the students, teachers and staff! Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Option For Survival Kits Works great on the go when you can't boil water. Much faster than chemical tablets. The SteriPen is very lightweight and takes up little space in your pack. The batteries last long enough to filter lots of water. The pre-filter is nice for dirty or sandy water. Works great with a Nalgene or Kleen Kanteen. A great option when you need to know you are drinking safe water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Handy Device My son and I recently went on a trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area and we used the SteriPen Classic 3 for all of our drinking water. It worked wonderful, very easy to use, we would treat a quart of water at a time and it was pretty quick. Saw lots of beaver in the lakes and we never had a problem, I'd say that tells the story.

SteriPEN is certified effective by the Water Quality Association and through testing at independent laboratories. Unfortunately, there isn't a quick test to verify the effectiveness when you're out it the field. You can review the results of indepent tests here: www.steripen.com/micro-biological-testing. Heeg, Netherlands. Hi there, Has Steripen a UV system for use just at home for two adults and two cats in case of hostile attacks on the watersystem? What do you recommend. Best regards

Asked by: Raymond
Raymond, You can treat a liter of water in 90 seconds, so SteriPEN could be used to provide the volume of water your household requires. Please be aware that SteriPEN is effective against microorganisms in the water - viruses, bacteria and protozoa. It is does not remove chemicals from water.

It looks like the pre-filter is designed to seal BOTH the inner AND outer flange on Nalgene bottles, however each of my 5 bottles have a different dimension between the two flanges so one of the 2seals lets water in & the threads are contaminated. ideas?

Asked by: larrybe
While the Pre-Filter is made to fit snugly on Nalgene style one-liter water bottles, it is not a perfect fit with every bottle out there. Our recommendation is that you wipe them dry after use.

Is it purified when light flashes red?

Asked by: bachman007
When the water is purified you will see the LED flash green. If you are seeing a red light flashing, that indicates the pen was removed from the water too soon. You can see a complete list of the indicator signals in the User Guide, which can be found at www.steripen.com/userguide. The Steripen works with Lithium AA batteries. I am guessing that means it will work with the 14500 Lithium Ion batteries that put out 3.7V per battery. If the pen takes 4 batteries, that means that it should handle 16.8V total. Is this correct?

Asked by: JoNat
A lithium AA battery puts out 1.5 volts and a 14500 lithium ion puts out 3.7 volts per battery. Even though the 14500 would physically fit in the SteriPEN this would be too much voltage and would damage the pen.

I used my SteriPEN with Alkaline batteries and it did not reach the 25 cycles for 1 ltrs on the trail. I replaced the batteries with NMH batteries. When I got home, I tested the Alkaline and they tested in the mid-good range. What gives?

Asked by: Allan
If you have a SteriPEN Classic 3, you should be able to treat around 50 liters using a new set of high quality alkaline batteries. Older model SteriPENs didn't operate well with alkaline batteries, so first, please make sure your SteriPEN is a Classic 3. The battery brand can affect performance. We recommend using a name brand battery and replacing all four batteries at the same time. If you continue to experience poor battery performance, please contact our support department at [email protected] or 888-826-6234. Thanks for choosing SteriPEN!

If you have further questions, please feel free to contact our support department at 888-826-6234.

Can I use the Steripen to filter tea if I am in a restaurant and not sure about the water purity?

Asked by: Lucinda

Where can I get the definition of the error codes. I took the paper that had the error codes with me camping and it got wet destroyed. Is there a copy online?

Asked by: Harry

I have a SteriPen like the Classic, it's started acting erratically. When activated it will sometimes operate correctly; green then the blinking green. An equal amount of times it goes green to red and won't operate. It's ~5yrs old but used on ~6-7 trips.

Will this do seawater? saltwater?

You're video shows full submersion of the water bottle which will contaminate the entire exterior of the bottle, filter, spout & probably bottle threads.   How does one decontaminate the bottle opening so one can drink directly from it?
