Proven Technology

SteriPEN harnesses the brilliant power of ultraviolet light to make water safe to drink. It’s the same technology used by leading bottled water manufacturers, as well as major cities in the U.S., Europe and Asia to purify water.

Extensive microbiological and structural testing by independent laboratories across the U.S. and Canada has proven SteriPEN to be safe and effective, confirming the fact that SteriPEN’s UV light technology eliminates over 99.9% of bacteria, viruses and protozoa that cause water-borne illness.

As a result, SteriPEN has earned the Water Quality Association’s Gold Seal, certifying that SteriPEN purifies water safely and effectively. SteriPEN purifies 16oz. (0.5L) in just 48 seconds; 32oz. (1.0L) in just 90 seconds. All without any pumping, timekeeping, or any added aftertaste or chemical odor.

SteriPEN products use ultraviolet (UV) light technology to purify water, destroying more than 99.9 percent of bacteria, viruses and protozoan cysts such as giardia and cryptosporidia.

The method has now been used for over one hundred years, and is currently used to purify drinking water by some of the largest cities in the world, including Seattle, New York (scheduled soon), Tempe, AZ  and many others in North America, Europe and Asia. Ultra Violet light is also used by leading bottled water manufacturers to purify their source water.

The EPA officially recognized the use of ultra-violet as a proven, viable technology in 1996: “Ultraviolet (UV) radiation has been found to be an effective disinfectant…. a useful small systems disinfection technology option.” UV purification works as the ultraviolet energy emitted by the light is absorbed by the cells of the microbe, preventing cell enzymes from ‘reading’ its DNA. Without intact DNA, microbes can’t reproduce to make you sick. The process is simple but effective, destroying over 99.9 percent of harmful microorganisms.

Purifying water with UV light offers many advantages. In addition to being safe and effective, UV light does not alter the taste, pH, or other properties of the water, and works without the introduction of chemicals to the water.

Love the Steripen for backpacking. Used extensively on Appalachian Trail.

    Question:
Can I rely on my Steripen when traveling abroad? I am in Peru now, soon to be in Bolivia. Is it safe to drink the tap water there if I use the Steripen?

The Pre-filter is a 40 micron filter designed to remove small twigs, leaf debris and other larger elements from water gathered from a pond or stream that would potentially block the UV rays administered by the SteriPEN’s lamp. It in no way filters chemicals. For that you would need a 1 micron filter that typically requires a pump to force the water through the super fine filter element and often employs charcoal and other elements for screening.

    I’m really interested about Steripen!

    Just one question:

Is it possible to use that to sterilize water inside PET bottles, or that material is not advised for UV light?

PET plastic bottles are perfectly fine for use with SteriPEN. You will most often find them with a narrow mouth like many store bought commercially bottled brands. The conical shaped lamp base of most of our models are perfect for forming a seal in this size bottle, to then invert and provide some motion to the water as it is being treated. (The Freedom and the Adventurer Opti are the exceptions.)

Hello. I am wondering if you have a slightly larger version of your product. I need to sterilize around 3 gallons of rain water per day collected off my roof at my off-the-grid cabin. I do not want a larger, undersink system that uses more electricity and cannot be turned on and off. It would be great if you could provide a system for cottagers like me that screws onto a 3-4 gallon water bottle and over the course of 20 minutes or so gently stirs the water and sterilizes it for that days drinking water and then can be taken home in the off season. Don’t know if this is on your radar but strikes me there is a good market – like all of my neighbours. Thanks for any suggestions. Steve Rhodes

The current recommendation of treating one liter at a time and transferring the purified water to larger containers is based on the need to have the prescribed distance and duration of the UV light to have the germicidal effect on the treated water. Hydro-Photon is always seeking to improve on the technology!

Does the steripen filter out heavy metals? I absolutely love mine and it has kept me from getting sick through many countries in Asia including India but just saw that tap water in Indonesia is heavily adulterated by heavy metals …

The SteriPEN’s technology is only for use on micro organism in drinking water and would have no effect on the lead, arsenic and other heavy metals in that water.

SteriPEN’s UV treatment does not filter, but rather works as the ultraviolet energy emitted by the light is absorbed by the cells of the microbes, preventing cell enzymes from ‘reading’ its DNA. Without intact DNA, microbes can’t reproduce to make you sick. The process is simple but very effective, destroying over 99.9 percent of harmful microorganisms.

Although the Ultra Violet light treatment administered by the SteriPEN does not “clear” the water of micro organisms that can cause waterborne illness, it renders their DNA incapable of reproduction. The effect is that they can not make you sick.

As viruses, Hepatitis A, B, C and D are among the microbes that are destroyed by SteriPEN’s UV light. Here’s a link to our web site’s page that addresses this: https://www.steripen.com/glossary/ .
